2 WASD Odyssey of the Mind Teams Advance to the World Finals

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (APRIL 3, 2017) — Two Williamsport Area School District Odyssey of the Mind teams are set to move on to the World Finals after competing at the state level on Saturday in Moon, Pa.
Seven teams from the district representing Cochran Primary School, Curtin and Lycoming Valley Intermediate schools, and Williamsport Area High School participated in the state event.
Those advancing to the World Finals are:
  • Curtin Intermediate School: First place, Division I, "A Superhero Cliffhanger," coached by Bret and Denise Southard. Team members: Olivia Ciabattari, Reese Kirk, Ross Mahler, Alanna Ramos, Lilyana Sponhouse, Muireann Tran and Tyler Williamson
  • Williamsport Area High School: Second Place, Division III, "It's Time, OMER," coached by Spring Moore, Matthew Gutberlet and Heather LeBlanc. Team members: Charlotte DeBloois, Paige Diabelko, Hannah Haussmann, Deidre LeBlanc, Ariyana Stafford, Carlee Weber and Madison Williamson.
The world competition is scheduled for May 24-27 at Michigan State University.
While not advancing, the following is a listing of how the other WASD teams ranked in the respective problems:
  • "Odd-a-Bot" — Eighth Place: Curtin, Division II; 10th Place: Cochran, Division I
  • "It's Time, OMER" — Fourth Place: Lycoming Valley, Division, II; 12th Place, Cochran, Division I
  • "A Superhero Cliffhanger" — Eighth Place: WAHS, Division III
Last year, 16 Williamsport students from Lycoming Valley and WAHS were remarkably successful in the program's regional, state and global competitions. Those teams competed at the University of Iowa, during which the WAHS teams ranked within the top 15 spots, earning sixth and 14th place.
