HEALTH CLASSES & FAMILY & CONSUMER SCIENCE CLASSES COMBINE TO CELEBRATE " THE GREAT PA. APPLE CRUNCH DAY"

On Wednesday, October 24, 2007 the 6th and 7th grade health classes along with the Family & Consumer Science classes celebrated the "Great PA. Apple Crunch Day". Each year this special event helps to encourage young people to generate a balance of healthy eating and active lifestyle choices. Students learn that eating at least two servings of fruit each day will get them on a path to a healthier lifestyle.

In celebrating the "Great PA. Apple Crunch Day", students took an "apple break". Each student received an apple to eat during their health and Family & Consumer Science classes. The apples were purchased through Wentzler Fruit Farms. A special Thank you to Dr. Carol Watson for the pick-up and delivery of the apples.

Students also received a pamphlet about the various apple types that explained their health benefits as well.
We encourage all families to eat healthy and to choose a healthy lifestyle.

Jackson Elementary School

Sport Stacking Speed Stacks

Janice Todd

One of the fastest growing new sports in the country has been taught at Jackson Elementary School for the past five years. A recent university study confirmed that cup stacking improves hand-eye coordination and reaction time by 30%. Not to mention the kids love it! Everyone is given the opportunity to work at and improve their level of skill with each up and down stack of the cups.

Why do I teach Sport Stacking?
o Children actively exercise the brain/body connection with each challenge promoting coordination, ambidexterity and hand-eye skills.
o Gives students the opportunity to use both sides of the body and the brain promoting bilateral proficiency.
o It encourages students to set goals by establishing personal records and reinforce perseverance and practice ethics as a way to improve those scores.
o Reinforce the value of teamwork and the never give up attitude in life.
o To have a lot of FUN!

The 1st-3rd grade students will stack during the latter half of October and 4th and 5th grades throughout the month of December. The students at Jackson Elementary School will learn everything from a 3 stack to the cycle, a series of stacks that include over 35 sequential moves. One of the favorite activities is the 15 move “rhythm cups” that is learned independently and performed as a group ranging from three to the entire class.

“My opinion is that cup stacking is a great activity for perceptual motor skills, dexterity, fine and gross motor development, cognition and enhanced connectivity.”

100 “miles” in 100 Days Program

Round Hills Elementary School is promoting physical activity for a healthy life through a 100 “miles” in 100 days program. Members of the Round Hills community (students, family members, staff) are invited to participate. To date, over 320 people have registered for the challenge. The goal is to complete 100 miles by the end of 2006. (One mile walking or running, or 20 minutes of exercise or active play equals one “mile”). The kick-off for the challenge was a one mile walk at the annual Round Hills Fall Festival, with 110 people participating in the walk. Also, in conjunction with the PANA walk to school day, the entire student body and staff participated in a one mile walk on Wed. Oct. 5. Anyone who completes the 100 “mile” challenge will receive a t-shirt provided by the Round Hills PTO.

Subject: “Live It!” Program for Students

Students attending Lycoming Valley Middle School will be participating in a nationwide campaign called Live It! – a program encouraging youth to lead healthy, active lifestyles and reach the President’s goal of “a healthier United States.” The Live It! campaign takes a fun, student-level approach to 1) being physically active on a daily basis and 2) making healthy eating choices at school, and at home. Since its inception Live It! has been implemented in over 6,500 schools in the U.S. reaching over 2 million students and teachers

The Live It! program features two student activities:

• Step With It focuses on the health benefits of stepping – a low-impact form of physical activity. The student goal is to record at least 10,000 steps a day, using a personal Stepometer™ measuring device and a list of fun and easy ideas for reaching the goal. All activities, soccer, football, skateboarding, dancing, even walking the family dog count as steps toward the 10,000 steps a day goal.

• Fit It In encourages making healthy food choices through daily food tips found on student “Activity Cards." The cards feature the USDA "MyPyramid" and encourage students to include whole grain foods, eat dark green or orange vegetables, choose lean meat, chicken or fish, and drink low-fat or fat-free milk as recommended in the US Dietary Guidelines.

During the one-week Live It! school program, your child’s class will keep track of both individual activity levels and the healthy food choices the students “fit in” each day. But they don’t have to stop there. Girls who achieve 11,000 steps daily and boys who reach 13,000 steps daily – five days a week, for six straight weeks – qualify for the Presidential Active Lifestyle Award (PALA) from “The President’s Challenge,” a program of The President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports. Coca-Cola will fund Presidential Active Lifestyle Awards for Students who access the "President's Challenge" via www.liveitprogram.com and successfully complete the program requirements. For more information on "The President's Challenge" or Live It!, please visit www.liveitprogram.com or www.presidentschallenge.org.

Teachers and cafeteria managers at your child's school have been provided a variety of Live It! materials for the classroom and lunchroom. We encourage you to support your child’s participation in the program both at school and at home.
We appreciate your support.

The Live It! physical activity and nutrition initiative has been developed by The Coca-Cola Company in partnership with the School Nutrition Association, “The President’s Challenge” Physical Activity and Fitness Awards (a program of The President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports), and the National Association for Sport and Physical Education.

Walk to School Day Walk to School Day

Walking is the best form of exercise. WHY? It's safe. It's easy. It's cheap.
With that in mind, the health, physical education, and guidance teachers at Curtin Middle School organized their first "Walk To School Day". It was organized as part of the Keystone Healthy Schools. It was held on Wed., Oct. 4, 2006.
Students who walked to achool that day, and turned in a signed permission slip, received a special breakfast treat compliments of our student council. The breakfast treat consisted of a cup of orange juice and a granola bar. Each walker that day also received a free bowling pass to Faxon Bowling Lanes.
We hoped to encourage our students to take the time to eat a healthy breakfast and to choose a more active lifestyle by walking to school.
The event was successful as 67 students participated.
