Jackson Elementary School
Sport Stacking Speed Stacks
One of the fastest growing new sports in the country has been taught at Jackson Elementary School for the past five years. A recent university study confirmed that cup stacking improves hand-eye coordination and reaction time by 30%. Not to mention the kids love it! Everyone is given the opportunity to work at and improve their level of skill with each up and down stack of the cups.
Why do I teach Sport Stacking?
o Children actively exercise the brain/body connection with each challenge promoting coordination, ambidexterity and hand-eye skills.
o Gives students the opportunity to use both sides of the body and the brain promoting bilateral proficiency.
o It encourages students to set goals by establishing personal records and reinforce perseverance and practice ethics as a way to improve those scores.
o Reinforce the value of teamwork and the never give up attitude in life.
o To have a lot of FUN!
The 1st-3rd grade students will stack during the latter half of October and 4th and 5th grades throughout the month of December. The students at Jackson Elementary School will learn everything from a 3 stack to the cycle, a series of stacks that include over 35 sequential moves. One of the favorite activities is the 15 move “rhythm cups” that is learned independently and performed as a group ranging from three to the entire class.
“My opinion is that cup stacking is a great activity for perceptual motor skills, dexterity, fine and gross motor development, cognition and enhanced connectivity.”
